I mean, I don’t have any reason to not accept John’s canon age. He *looks* 37, and he had no reason to leave the military earlier. The youngest I’d go on Sherlock is 32, because I wouldn’t believe John moving in with someone way outside his age group

He looked young enough to be suspicious in tagging. That’s child’s play. I figured he’d been at war for between two and five years, because 16, 4 uni years, 4 med school years, 2 training years, 2 doctor years, at which time he may or may not have been recruited. thats 28… then war for just a bit, enough to miss it, then gets shot. 32-36.

And Sherlock acts old enough to be in his late thirties, but he’s a heavy smoker and cocaine addict (or, at least, was). three nicotine patches is almost lethal, technically. he would have to be young enough to handle the influx of nicotine without being older than thirty-five (i know, ive seen). enough cocaine to kill him but hasn’t killed him is young, very young… um…

cocaine addict. err, at uni, most likely. 16, uni 4 years, known lestrade for five. mycroft, in that case, can’t be a day over forty… sherlock is between twenty seven and thirty two. mycroft is older than john, though… 38? between thirty six and forty.

lestrade, married, can’t remember if he has kids. thirty eight to forty five. donovan, anderson, thirties.

Yeah, i just figure that John was in the military longer. He has no reason to leave – no friends outside the service; no family to mention outside his sister, and he doesn’t want to be around her; no ambition outside the service; and he likes war – and Sherlock I think mentions in passing that John was part of the invasion of Afghanistan, which was nine years before the series starts (but I don’t know if that’s literally true or just hyperbole). I really have no reason for his canon age to be wrong.

Sherlock has to be old enough for people - people older than him - to respect his opinions as an adult. I mean, they don’t respect him because he knows too much and he doesn’t respect propriety and he likes murders, but they treat him as a peer and not some wacky wiz-kid who knows too much for his own good. That’s why I can’t deal with him being in his twenties. Someone like Lestrade (who in my head can’t be younger than 43, and is more like 45-50 – Rupert Graves is 48, after all, and look at that hair) isn’t really going to have the amount of respect for Sherlock that he does if Sherlock is 20 years younger than him, or if he’d met Sherlock when Sherlock was barely out of uni and Lestrade was already a DI.

Also Sherlock has to be old enough to have worked on a murder in the 80’s. If what’s-his-face with the shoes was killed in ‘89, that’s 21 years prior to the series start. He started “early” (in John’s words), but how young is that? He was old enough to want attention and try to get it, which I’d place in his early teens.

I thought Mycroft was like, significantly older than Sherlock, though, old enough to act as a parent. I heard the number twelve years get thrown around sometime? But I don’t know where I heard that.
